I am your teacher, Ms. Naylor, and this is our class website. Of course, since we are starting online this year, we also have a Google Classroom. All of our assignments and announcements will be posted to the Google Classroom but some extra, helpful information will be posted here.
If you look at the top you will see my other classes (Sophomore English and Newspaper) and you will see my blog. The blog is where I post (hopefully) interesting information such as recommendations for hobbies, books, movies, etc. I will make new posts, but you can also look back at older posts that began in March. The Resources page is where I try to gather together in one place information that you may find helpful. For example, I post about where to get food, internet access, etc. so be sure to check it out. For the beginning of the semester, you will be asked to choose a book to read. You can read just about any book you choose (it needs to be a book that is appropriate for school) but a novel (or biography or other book with a narrative) would work best. You must choose a book you have not read before.
Since this is an honors class, here is a list of books recommended for high school students who want to take A.P. English senior year (you have to scroll down a bit to get to the list). You can choose one of these books but you do not have to. There are several options for choosing your book:
You need to finish reading your book by Sep. 2/3. You will then have an assignment. I will ask you to complete a reading log twice a week (five total). Each log is a question that you can answer with a short paragraph. The reading log due dates are Aug. 17/18, 20/21, 24/25, 27/28, and Aug. 31/Sep. 1. Since the first reading log is due Aug. 17/18 - you will need to start reading your book this weekend. If you start reading your book and decide you do not like it, you can change books - but you will have less time to read it, so choose wisely. If you need help choosing a book, I have listed some recommendations below. You can also email me for suggestions. Keep in mind that you MAY be asked to review or recommend your book to other students in the class, possibly in a video or group meeting. Helpful Links:
FYI: everything below this post is old (from the 12-20 school year) so it does not apply to our current class.
The last few days of school are here. There is this week, and then there are only three school days next week (Monday is a holiday and the last day of school is Thursday, May 28).
The district has said that teachers should not give finals. We only have two assignments this week (voting for the final two poems in the poetry bracket and the optional Flipgrid book review) and then you have until Thursday, May 28 at 3:00 p.m. to turn in any late work from distance learning. I will not grade any late work after that time, but if you need to send me an email to explain your circumstances, you can. I will for sure have your final grades done by Tuesday, June 2, but I will probably be done sooner than that. Today, I went to school and visited our classroom for one hour so I could clean up and take some things home. I miss you guys, but at least I will see you next year (or whenever school resumes in person). Also, I will probably have some of you in my journalism class next year! If you checked out a book from my classroom library, just please take care of it and you can return it to me when we go back to school. I'll let you know what the school says about returning textbooks and library books. Let me know (send me an email) if there is anything I can do to help you these last few weeks. I will also be available the first six weeks of summer because I am teaching Summer School from home. If you want to continue checking this website, I will keep updating it with information about school, etc. Have a good couple of weeks and a good summer! This week we will finish reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. This is a book that many people enjoy, in fact, it recently won The Great American Read!
Most of you got this book from the book room on the last day we were at school. If you do not have the book, however, you can read it online here: To Kill a Mockingbird Full Text HERE IS SOME HELPFUL INFORMATION: Course Hero: To Kill a Mockingbird Sparknotes To Kill a Mockingbird Shmoop To Kill a Mockingbird HERE IS OUR READING SCHEDULE: Week 5: April 27-May 1 We will start reading To Kill a Mockingbird. (Chap. 1-11). Week 6: May 4-8 We will continue reading To Kill a Mockingbird (Chap 12-21). The final draft of your Night essay is also due this week - more details on that will follow. Week 7: May 11-15 We will finish reading To Kill a Mockingbird (Chap. 22-31) Week 8: May 18-22 (the week before finals, AKA "Closed Week") You will work on your independent/choice reading book project this week. You will make a FlipGrid video where you review/recommend the book you read. Week 9: May 25-28 (Finals week) There is no final exam. Your Flipgrid video will be due this week. This week, May 4-8, is Teacher Appreciation Week. I know I'm your teacher, so maybe it is weird for me to tell you about it, but I thought you might want to know.
If you have a moment, you might want to send an email to one (or all) of your teachers telling them that you appreciate them. I'm sure they would enjoy that, especially since we are all missing our students during distance learning! On Thursday, April 23, at 9:45-12:30 (or 10:00 - 11:00 depending on who you ask) our school's poetry team will be competing online in the annual Get Lit Classic Slam! You can watch it online here:
